When I started my career in 2011, I always knew it was just a stepping stone to becoming an entrepreneur. In 2012, when I was thinking about finally leaving the audit firm I was working with, a colleague shared with me an article about starting a business with only $100 in the bank. I became a huge fan of Chris Guillebeau’s ever since.
Chris will be launching his fourth book, Born for This: How to Find the Work You were Meant to Do, tomorrow. Being a big fan, I grabbed the opportunity of being part of Chris’s Street Team, a group of people who have the privilege of receiving an advanced copy of his new book, reviewing it, and promoting it to our own networks.
This week, we’ll be having a “Chris Guillebeau Week” starting today until Saturday. For the next six days, I’ll be sharing with you the lessons I learned from his new book. For today, I’ll start with a book review.
What the book is about:
As the subtitle suggests, Born for This is about finding the work that you were born to do.
Chris begins by introducing a simple formula of Joy, Money, and Flow. The work you were meant to do lies in the intersection of those three.
Chris also writes that finding the work you were meant to do is like winning the lottery. When you win it, you win big. But just like the lottery, you also have to follow a series of steps like buying a ticket and choosing your numbers to be able to participate and give yourself a chance to win. To win the “career lottery,” you also have to follow the specific steps which he talks about in the book.
In the first part of the book, Chris shares general tips to win the career lottery. He talks about choosing the winning path (Hint: There’s no one winning path.), assessing risks, overcoming fear, mastering the right skills, and believing in yourself.
In the second part of the book, Chris talks about more specific “career paths” like starting a side business, building your own empire, becoming an indispensable employee, and being a do-it-yourself rockstar. More importantly, he shares highly practical tips and step-by-step advice on how you can start taking the path you want.
Are you feeling lost in your career? Are you unsure of what path to take? Are you asking, “What next?” Then, this book is for you.
Chris is a master storyteller. He writes in a compelling way that makes you want to find out what happens next. He tells his story (and the stories of other people in his book) as if you are part of the story.
He writes in an optimistic way. By reading his book, he makes you feel that you can win the career lottery as well.
At the same time, Chris is realistic. He gives you a complete picture of finding the work you were meant to do. He is the first to tell you that doing the work you love is not always a bed of roses. He shares with you all the details of pursuing an unconventional career. What I like most about Chris's writing style is that he doesn’t oversell what he’s advocating. Still, for the most part, finding and doing the work that you love is usually more fun than you expect it to be.
What draws people to Chris’s work—his blog, his books, his programs—is the practicality and actionability of his writings. His tips are detailed, but simple, at the same time, that you can take action as soon as you read them.
The only drawback of Chris’s new book is that it’s hard to finish it. Because of his writing style, you’d want to put down the book after every chapter, story, or practical tip, take action, and start finding the work you were meant to do right away—whenever you want and wherever you are. But, really, that's a good thing.
Whether you’re just starting in your (unconventional) career or already thinking about what’s next, this book is for you. This book is jam-packed with practical tips and paradigm-shifting lessons to help you get started or go further in your career.
When you’re just starting, you need detailed steps on how to get started and some guidance on the roadblocks you are likely to face. Also, you need to be exposed to the different opportunities and paths around you. Chris does just that in great detail with highly practical tips and step-by-step guides.
When you’re thinking about what’s next, you need paradigm-shifting tips to help you get over the hump—whether in starting or growing a business or building a career. Chris provides many of these which will prove useful in your long journey to finding and doing the work that you love.
This is a book that was not written to be read once. This book was written to be your constant companion in finding, doing, and creating work that matters (and that makes money at the same time).
Like what I already mentioned, Born for This is a highly practical book filled with actionable tips.
One last thing: Be careful when you pick up this book. As you read this book, be prepared to have your mind bombarded with ideas on how to find and do the work that you love.
