The best way to help the poor

Let us help the poor one person, one family at a time. But more importantly, let us share Jesus with them one person, one family at a time.

What is the best way to help the poor? Is it by giving them fish or teaching them to fish?

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus gives us a clue.

“You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.” — John 12:8

The best way to help the poor is not by giving them fish or teaching them to fish. It is by introducing to them the One who creates the fish. By letting them know that God is always with them.

At the end of the day, not even material wealth or a comfortable life can give them (or us) the peace, the wholeness, the hope, and the love that come only from God.

When they seek God first, everything else will also be given to them besides — their daily bread, the understanding of their self-worth, the importance of toiling and making sacrifices, the dignity of labor, and joining their sufferings with Christ’s and the Church’s, and the knowledge that with God, nothing is impossible.

Let us help the poor one person, one family at a time. But more importantly, let us share Jesus with them one person, one family at a time.
